Social Development Month Media Breakfast Briefing

An efficient state protects citizens, provides quality services and infrastructure, and gives leadership in matter of development. Since 1994, significant progress has been made towards making South Africa a more just and inclusive society.

October has been declared Social Development Month. Every year the Department of Social Development in collaboration with the National Development Agency (NDA), South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), Non-Governmental Organizations and community-based organizations highlight key government programmes that are aimed at addressing South Africa’s socio-economic challenges.

During this month the activities will be

To celebrate, promote and highlights government programme of action (POA)
To inform and educate citizens about achievements on Social Development Priorities
To empower communities on poverty reduction interventions.
To promote partnership between Department of Social Development, NGOs, FBOs and Private Sector
To educate and empower communities about the impact of substance abuse on society.
To encourage young people to participate in the social work profession

The launch will be held in conjunction with the 10th Birthday Celebrations of Sinothando Children’s Home which cares for vulnerable children that are affected and infected by HIV/AIDS. The care centre delivers the following services to the children.

Health care

Children infected by HIV/AIDS are put on correct medication and managed as prescribed. All children are taken to clinics and hospitals for regular checkups and treatment.

Physical care

Children are provided with clothing, linen and toiletries. With the assistance of dieticians three balanced nutritional meals per day are provided. The physical development of children are assessed regularly.

Educational care

Pre -school children attend the Warren Symcox Early Childhood Development Centre and school going children attend various community schools. Children are enrolled in schools according to their special needs and progress.

Social work services and developmental work focuses on the following areas:

Admission and orientation of children
Assessment of children to compile and address Individual Developmental and Permanency Plans
Therapeutic programs: individual and group therapy, family group conferences and family therapy
Developmental programs: holiday programs and camps, week end programs, gardening skills, involvement of extra mural activities at schools,
Behaviour management program, focussing on discipline and routine of our children
Family reunification and reintegration program
