Handing over of beds to Resthaven Old Age Home

The Departments of Social Development and Correctional Services will be handing over 13 refurbished beds to the Resthaven Old Age Home.

Date: Thursday, 8 August 2013
Time: 10:00
Venue: Resthaven Old Age Home, 16 Church Road, Kimberley

The Keynote address will be delivered by the Head of the Department of Social Development, Ms. Elizabeth Botes, while the Regional Commissioner of Correctional Services, Ms. Moodley will also be in attendance.  All 48 residents of the Resthaven Old Age Home, as well as 30 of the Shining Stars Service Centre members, who resort under the Resthaven Welfare Society, will attend.

The need for these beds with railings, to accommodate frail older people was originally identified during a visit by President Jacob Zuma on 7 September 2012.  The Department of Social Development, as the custodians of older persons was tasked with this responsibility.

The Department of Social Development planned to buy the necessary beds, but due to the involvement of Department Correctional Services a saving was incurred, when they agreed to convert 13 redundant beds of the Tswelopele Correctional Centre, in Kimberley.  The Department of Social Development took responsibility to purchase the material for the conversion.

The Department of Social Development, through this partnership with the Department of Correctional Services, is building on their commitment to the bettering of the lives of the elderly involved at the Resthaven Welfare Society.

During the Presidential visit in September the Department handed over the following items:  48 three-quarter bed comforter sets; four 20-litre pots; two 2-litre pots, while the following infrastructural needs were addressed:

  • Geyser
  • Valve
  • Vacuum breaker
  • Basin's outside outlet
  • Washers on taps x 5
  • Toilet seats x 8
  • leak in toilet cone rubber
  • Locks on four distribution boxes
  • Ramp at new wing
  • Steel plate at back entrance

The Department of Social Development is subsidising them, as well as paying the salary of the Manager.  The Department also initiated a food garden project in order to ensure food security; on this project the Department partnered with the Office of the Premier, who installed the irrigation system to reduce the initial set-up costs.
