MEC Dawid Rooi

Dawid Rooi was born at Klipfontein in the Namaqua district on 22 July 1965. He started his schooling at Klipfontein Primary School before advancing to St Cyprian Primary at Nababeeb. He attended Bergsig Senior Secondary School where he was expelled due to his political activities, later matriculating in 1993.  He worked at Alexcor diamond mine from 1987 up until 1999.

MEC Rooi gained political consciousness from the trade unions and civic movement in 1985.

  • He joined the National Union of Mineworkers in 1987 and was elected NUM treasurer in 1988 until 1993 at Alexcor mine.
  • In 1996 he was elected branch chairperson and later co-opted as Deputy Regional Chair of NUM Western Cape. During the same year he was promoted to Regional Chair of the National Union of Mine Workers and elected to National Executive Committee of NUM from 1996-1999.
  • In 1999 he became an African National Congress member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature and elected as chairperson of SCOPA during this term.
  • MEC Rooi was appointed as Member of Executive Council for Agriculture, Land Reform and Environment in 2004.
  • During the 2004-2009 period he was chairperson of both SCOPA and Finance Portfolio Committee.


MEC Dawid Rooi is married to Magdalene Rooi with whom he has five lovely children.

He played cricket during high school and enjoys playing golf as a past time.
